Poker is a card game in which players place chips (representing money) into the pot before dealing themselves two cards face up. Each player has the option to call or raise a bet, and there are multiple betting rounds in most variations. The player with the best hand wins the pot.
There are many different rules for poker, but the most popular are cash games and tournament play. Regardless of the variant being played, most games are fast-paced and involve continuous action as players bet on their own hands. Players can also check, or pass on their turn to act, if they don’t wish to place a bet.
Poker has its roots in European card games of the 17th century. The most likely immediate predecessor of poker is a game called Poque, which was widely played in the French city of Poche in the 16th century. The game spread to the United States in the early 19th century, where it gained popularity among riverboat crews and soldiers during the Civil War. Poker is now a worldwide phenomenon with many different variants.
