Poker is a card game in which players place chips (representing money) into a pot before dealing each other cards. The player with the best hand takes the pot. Players may also raise or drop their bets as they compete for the pot. Players may also bluff in the hope that other players will call their bets, even though they do not have a good hand.
There are hundreds of different variations of the game, but most of them share certain fundamental features. Generally, a poker game consists of one or more betting intervals, with each player placing chips into the pot (representing money) in turn after each round. Players must put in at least as many chips as the player who placed them before him in order to be eligible to continue competing for the pot.
A poker game is played with a standard set of poker chips, with each color representing a specific value: a white chip is worth the minimum ante or bet; a red chip is worth five whites; and a blue chip is worth 10 whites. Each player must buy in for a specified number of chips at the beginning of the game.
In poker, players are dealt two personal cards each and then five community cards are revealed in three stages known as the flop, turn, and river. Players can then choose to throw away their own cards or take (draw) replacements. When a player draws replacement cards, the new cards are not revealed to other players.
