The world’s biggest casinos are like super-sized theme parks that promise unforgettable experiences from the moment you step through their doors. They’re also often the most expensive, with the most glamorous locations – like the glitzy mega-casinos of Las Vegas and Macau – charging top dollar for entry.
However, some of the most impressive casinos are not in the most glam destinations. The elegant spa town of Baden-Baden, for example, was once a playground for Europe’s royalty and aristocracy 150 years ago, and today attracts a more diverse clientele.
While it is difficult to say when the first casino was opened, historians agree that it existed in some form across all cultures and eras. Some of the earliest casinos that have survived to this day were established in the 17th century, including the famous Ridotto in Venice, which operated for over a century and a half.
