The game of poker is a card game with elements of chance and psychology. However, once betting is introduced it becomes a game of strategy and skill. A player wins by having a higher hand than his opponent or scaring him into surrendering.
To start the game, players bet in turn clockwise around the table. Each player must either raise or call. When a player calls, they have to match the amount raised by the last person or more. If a player has no desire to open the betting, they can simply check (pass on their turn to act).
After the first round of bets is over, 3 cards are dealt face-up at the center of the table. These are called the flop. Players use these cards along with the 2 personal cards in their hands to build a five-card poker hand.
A player can also choose to discard and draw replacement cards at this point if the rules allow it. Depending on the rules, this may be done during or after the betting phase.
After the flop betting phase, there is another final betting phase before the players reveal their hands. The winning hand is determined by the highest combination of rank of cards (suit does not matter). In the event of a tie, the prize is split evenly.
